Care and Maintenance of Hemp Building Materials
Hempcrete and other hemp-based construction materials have unique "care" requirements to ensure long-term performance:
- Structural Integrity: Hempcrete is not a load-bearing material. It must always be used as an infill cast around a structural frame made of timber, steel, or brick.
- Breathability and Moisture: Hempcrete is vapor-permeable, meaning it regulates humidity by absorbing and releasing moisture. To maintain this "breathable" quality, it should be finished with breathable lime plasters rather than modern synthetic coatings that might trap moisture.
- Low Maintenance Insulation: Hemp insulation is noted for its ability to not settle over time, which avoids the development of cavities and reduces the need for long-term maintenance compared to some traditional materials.
- Varnish Application: When using hemp seed oil as a wood varnish, it should primarily be used indoors (such as on flooring or paneling) due to its low UV-resistance rating
